At just 18 years old, Jakob Lang stands on the deck of his sailboat, eyes fixed on the horizon. His mission? To become the youngest German – speaking sailor to circumnavigate the world solo—all while fighting ocean pollution. Launched on September 25, 2024, his “Voyage for the Voiceless” is more than a sailing feat; it’s a floating protest against plastic waste. From surviving a 40 – knot storm in the English Channel to raising awareness about ocean pollution, Jakob proves that youth and idealism can chart a course for change.

The Spark: A Childhood Anchored in Sails and Sustainability
Jakob’s love for the sea began at age 6, through his dad, who sailed a small catamaran alone when he was young. “I’d spend hours in harbor marinas, marveling at how sailboats seemed to dance with the wind,” he writes in his blog. But alongside his fascination grew a stark reality: during family vacations on a small island, he saw beaches smothered in plastic bottles and fishing nets. As he learned that millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, he vowed to use sailing as a platform for change. “I wanted to combine my passion with purpose,” he says. “What better way to advocate for the ocean than to sail its most vulnerable waters?”

The Journey: Preparing for a Solo Odyssey Against the Odds
The Boat: A Tiny Fortress on the Sea
His vessel is SV Wolf, a 1976 Dehler Optima 92 (9.2 m/31 ft). Recently, he overhauled its electrical system and added two solar panels to power navigation, lighting, and the fridge. The living space on the boat is quite compact. “Every inch matters,” he explains in a YouTube vlog.

Trials and Tribulations
In the middle of the English Channel, about 40 nautical miles from Cap de la Hague in France, he encountered a 40 – knot gust storm. He single – handedly set a storm sail and navigated through the thunderstorm. “I clung to the wheel for hours, drenched and determined,” he recounts. Yet, instead of turning back, he persevered, filming the ordeal to show “sailing’s raw reality.”
The Mission: Sailing as a Voice for the Ocean
“Voyage for the Voiceless” Campaign
Jakob’s voyage is a moving statement for ocean conservation. He documents his findings on his blog and shares them on YouTube, which has over 13,000 subscribers. His “Waste Tracker” map highlights pollution hotspots. Through his travels, he hopes to inspire others to take action against plastic waste. He believes that his sailing journey is a way to give voice to the ocean.
A Message for a Generation
In his video “SAILING SOLO AROUND THE WORLD: The Adventure of a Lifetime,” he admits fears of isolation but emphasizes that the ocean’s plight due to pollution is even more concerning. He has mentioned in his videos that every piece of plastic waste he collects is a step towards making a difference for the ocean.

Beyond the Horizon: Redefining Adventure as Advocacy
Jakob’s journey challenges stereotypes of solo sailing as a lonely pursuit. Through live Instagram updates and weekly blog posts, he invites followers into his world: sunrise sail trims, midnight navigation under star – filled skies, and the quiet joy of spotting a pod of dolphins—unspoiled by trash. “I want people to fall in love with the ocean, so they’ll fight to protect it,” he says.
He has called for beach clean – up activities and public engagement in his fight against ocean pollution. He emphasizes that youth are not only the future but also the driving force for current action.
