A Sailor’s Paradise: Gudhjem Marina in Bornholm, Denmark

The Allure of Gudhjem Marina

For sailors embarking on a global odyssey, Gudhjem Marina in Bornholm, Denmark, is a must – visit destination. Tucked away on the east coast of the idyllic Bornholm Island in the Baltic Sea, this marina offers a unique blend of functionality and charm.

Gudhjem Marina

Gudhjem Marina is composed of three basins, with the first being the largest, though “large” is relative, measuring around 45 by 45 metres. Mooring here can be a bit of a challenge as there are no bollards. However, sailors can make use of the large steel rings on top of the stone walls or wrap their mooring lines around the wooden bumper – traverses near the waterline. Once safely moored, you can connect to shore power, though you may need an adapter as they have 220 V – plugs. The entrance to the harbor is narrow, just 10 metres wide, and there’s a small sandbank on the starboard side in front of it. But with a clearly visible bearing line, entering the harbor is possible day and night. Just be cautious when a ferry to the small island of Christiansö is moored at the entrance or inside the first basin, as you may have to wait for it to leave. The demurrage is reasonably priced, and it includes a high – quality WiFi that reaches every corner of the harbor and unlimited shower time. The bathroom facilities are a bit unconventional; there are public toilets in the red house near the harbor, and the “sailors’ bathrooms” are located near the library up the main street.

A Glimpse into History and Culture

Bornholm Island has a rich and storied past. Hammershus, a medieval fortress built in the 12th century, once provided protection for the island until it was abandoned in 1743. Exploring its ruins, you can almost feel the echoes of the past, imagining the lives of those who once inhabited this strategic stronghold. The island’s historical significance is also intertwined with its status as a haven for artists. In 2017, Bornholm became the first island in the world and the first place in Europe to be awarded “world craft region” status. Local artists draw inspiration from the island’s natural landscape and use materials sourced right from the island. In Gudhjem, you’ll find that every other building seems to be an art gallery or a local produce store, reflecting the creative and cultural vibrancy of the place.

Breathtaking Natural Landscapes

The natural beauty of Bornholm is simply captivating. The island’s northern coast features a rocky and rugged landscape, offering dramatic views of the sea. The 7km “Stonecutters” hike, starting from Sandvig beach, takes you to the lighthouse and the most northerly point of the island. Here, you can enjoy the sight of passing ships and free – roaming cows against the backdrop of the vast sea. In the south, Dueodde beach is a haven of white sand that’s finer than sieved flour and squeaks with every step. At night, the rotating lighthouse lamp sporadically lights up the beach, creating a magical atmosphere. Gudhjem itself, with its colorful houses built into a sharp, stepped ridge, offers stunning views at every turn. The contrast between the colorful architecture and the deep – blue sea is a sight to behold.

A Gastronomic Adventure

Food in Bornholm is a celebration of local produce. The local dish, “sol over Gudhjem,” is a must – try. Consisting of smoked herring with radish and raw egg yolk on toasted rye bread, it offers a unique and delicious taste of the island. Michelin – starred restaurant Kadeau, set on the dunes above a sandy beach, is a temple of sustainable cuisine. The restaurant sources as much produce as possible from the island, and its menu is a reflection of Bornholm’s flavors. You might even find ants on the menu, used as a substitute for lemons which don’t grow well on the island. In Gudhjem and other villages on the island, you can also enjoy ice cream, juice, beer, and pastries, nearly all of which are organically sourced from the island.
